Web hosting: must-know tips before you get started

a. You almost always get what you paid for
If your website is primarily a hobby on the side then this shouldn’t matter as much. However, as an essential business tool, it’s often a false economy to go for the cheapest deal (or a free one) on offer.

b. Beware of pricing tricks
The overwhelming majority of web hosting vendors offer low prices at the beginning of their contracts, but jack up the pricing after the introductory period ends, which can be 24, 36 or even 60 months after signing up. Always look for the total cost of ownership.

c. Just how trustworthy is the provider?
Just about anyone can pretend to be a real web host and just be reselling someone else’s products. So, look to see how long they’ve been around, if they have a contact address, who owns them, are they making realistic promises on the website and so on. Google is your friend here.

d. Know your limits
How comfortable are you with creating your own website? Do you need external help to understand the numerous ramifications (including legal and commercial ones) that publishing one entails?

e. Consider website builders
You don’t need web hosting to get online, and website builders offer an interesting and compelling alternative. However, you can’t migrate your content easily if you want to leave because of their proprietary nature.

So, why do I recommend SiteGround ?

SiteGround is faster

The results below are based on tests with real accounts on 12 of the most popular web hosts: Bluehost, HostGator, iPage, Fatcow, Justhost, ASmallOrange, InMotion, WebhostingHub, Arvixe, GoDaddy, GreenGeeks and A2Hosting.

SiteGround is safer

Most web hosting accounts are on what’s called “shared hosting”. This means that you and many others are hosted on the same server. (You can purchase dedicated server hosting so that you are the only person hosted on that server, but this is usually much more expensive.) Shared hosting is fine, except when another person’s website hosted on the same server gets hacked. It’s possible that from that hacked account the rest of the server gets hacked too.

You can rest easy knowing that SiteGround were the pioneers in applying effective account isolation mechanisms to the shared hosting environment. This means that SiteGround guards your website or blog from your neighbours unlike most shared web hosting accounts.

Another great thing about SiteGround hosting is that they take a backup of your site daily. So in the event of any disaster, you can restore your website easily and painlessly from your last known good backup.

SiteGround offers free SSL certificates

As from Janaury 2017, Google Chrome marked non-HTTPS web pages that ask for sensitive information (such as credit card details or passwords) as insecure with a red exclamation mark. Going forward, they’ve announced that in the future, all non-HTTPS pages will be marked as insecure, irrespective of whether you ask for sensitive information or not. So if your site is not using HTTPS yet, I would definitely recommend that you do it soon.

In order to use HTTPS, your site will need to have an SSL certificate installed. SiteGround offers FREE SSL certificates for all their shared hosting plans and it’s super easy to get it installed.

SiteGround has the best customer support

In an ideal world, the support department of all hosting companies should be knowledgeable enough to answer technical questions. Unfortunately this is not an ideal world, and with some of the other web hosting companies, I often have the impression that their support staff is just reading a script and has very little understanding of what they are reading out to you. This is where SiteGround truly shines. In my experience, SiteGround answers support inquiries faster and better than anyone else. Their support staff actually understand the technical questions I put to them and help me resolve issues promptly, every time.

SiteGround Hosting Plan

SiteGround offers three different shared WordPress hosting plans. Here are the three options that are available to you:

  • StartUp – starts at $3.95 per month for one website and ~10,000 monthly visits. This is the ideal choice for beginners and includes one website,  unlimited emails, 10 GB webspace, free WordPress install, free SSL, 4 server locations, and unlimited MySQL database.
  • GrowBig – starts at $5.95 per month for unlimited websites and ~25,000 monthly visits. This is the plan we tested and is more suitable for larger and popular websites. GrowBig includes multiple websites,  20GB webspace, free WordPress transfer, priority support, free back-up, WordPress SuperCacher, along with all the features StartUp comes with.
  • GoGeek – starts at $11.95 per month for unlimited websites, staging, improved performance, and ~100,000 monthly visits. GoGeek is their most expensive plan coming at $29.95 per month without discount and includes multiple websites, 30GB web space, and  1-click WordPress Staging, free back-ups on request, PCI compliant servers, and all the features StartUp and GrowBig have.

For most casual users, the GrowBig plan probably offers the best value.

I hope you’ve found this post useful in helping you find out more about SiteGround. Remember, you don’t have to be stuck with a web host you don’t like! And if you have any questions about SiteGround or anything else, please feel free to send me a message and I’ll get back to you shortly.
